Customers are being reminded that the winter moratorium ends April 15th
Algoma Utilities is advising customers who are behind on their utility bills to begin making payments on their accounts to avoid disconnection of their electric service.
The Winter Emergency Period, often referred to as the moratorium on residential service disconnection, ends April 15, 2010. After that date, utilities statewide may begin to disconnect electric service to customers who are past due on payment of their bills for any period of time, including the winter moratorium. The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) established the moratorium — November to April — to protect customers from harsh Wisconsin winters.
To prevent disconnection, Algoma Utilities urges customers to begin making payments to reduce their account balance. The utility will issue a final disconnection notice prior to limiting service.
There are several payment options available, including credit card. Customers may also wish to contact Kewaunee Social Services for possible assistance, although income guidelines apply. To explore payment options, call the Utilities at 487-5556 or visit www.algomautilities.com.
